Palm Sunday

"Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord...At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. John 12:12&16
Just as the disciples had to look back to see all the truths the Lord had shown them and understand His constant involvement in the lives of men, we are daily amazed and grateful that the Lord opened one door for Katrina to move to the Houston area to teach after she graduated from college-as several years later she would need to be close to MD Anderson for her Burkitt's leukemia treatment. "Hosanna! Blessed is the King of Israel"
Chemo continues on this AM. The remaining doses will then be at noon and mid-night tonight. The 3:00AM blood labs came back with a low Hemoglobin so Katrina is getting the first of two units of blood right now. (thank you again and again for those donating in her name and honor!!) She also got Benedryl with the blood so she is currently sleeping. She ate cereal earlier. I am glad she has an appetite this AM as it waned yesterday. Her electrolytes were off so she is also getting IV's to replentish those. All this means is the chemo is working:) Her kidneys continue to function normally. Shannon, thank you for asking about the jaw pain. The pain itself has been gone for some time. She no longer takes any narcotic pain meds and it is good to be off of those. She does continue to have jaw area numbness, centered around her chin but that is very slowly improving. One way I can tell is that when she puts on her Burt's Bees lip balm, she always hits her bottom lip. When it was so numb, she would apply it underneath and on her chin. Usually we had to help her. She just couldn't tell where she was putting it. Dr. Estrov had said that most patients get relief from all this immediately but in some cases it can take a couple of months and that is what it probably will be for her. She had Burkitt's loaded in her jaw and a mass at the joint by her left ear so it was pretty intense. All that is gone after the first course of chemo. Her day nurse today is Beatrice, same nurse she had yesterday so there is good continuity. We have not seen her doctor today. Yesterday he came in late afternoon and talked to Louis and Katrina. I had gone over to Subway for a sandwich and took a walk around Rice University campus which is nearby. Lots going on there- a big track meet, tennis match, fencing tournament, a Pow-wow. Wildflowers were blooming along a walking path- so beautiful.

  1. Hi Katrina and family!
As I've thought about you all this past week, my mind kept wandering to this poem.

    Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord, "You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during
the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?"

The Lord replied, "The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
    is when I carried you."

My prayer for you this week has been that all of you can feel the Lord carrying you at this very difficult time. You are all in my prayers multiple times each day and I am so glad to hear that this round is going well!!!
    Love you,
    Amber

  5. Lori,
Reading your blogs are like reading a daily devotional, its absolutely amazing!!! From cereal to electrolytes, I'm thrilled that you are getting everything you need. Toni Chan and the MD Anderson blood drive staff did such an amazing job yesterday and I guess there is talk of doing another one before school gets out. Thank you Lord for providing for Katrina and her family right now. We know nothing is impossible with you, its all God-possible!!! Can't wait to hear when you are able to be home in your own bed. Praying for continued good health for Louis and Lori and increased good health for Katrina.

    With continued prayer,
    Jacque Hardy and family

  6. Katrina and family,

I am so glad to hear things are going better this time around.

Dawn set up a table and we sold more Yang's Gang shirts at the soccer fields on Saturday. They are putting in a 3rd order this week! We are so blessed to have you in our community - you are so loved. There is going to be a Girl Scout blood drive in your honor April 24 and we will be there with the shirts and a bake sale.

Rest well tonight and keep fighting hard. It sounds like you will be home in your own bed soon.

    With continual prayer,
    Jamie McLain

  8. Good Morning!
What a beautiful morning it is, Thank you Lord! Have been thinking of you and praying for you all weekend. As some of the other Mom's posted it was a beautiful weekend full of "Yang's Gang" activities, many more shirts sold and the blood/platelet drive was wonderful! We are continually thinking of more things to do to support you and your family as you/we are on this journey with you. Praying today that you will be coming home today to the comforts of you own home. We love you and miss you!
