Hebrews 4:16, "Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."
Louis took us to MD Anderson Cancer Center this AM for Katrina's first out patient visit. We know the hospital fairly well now even though it is huge. We went to fast-track lab and it turned out to be just that. Sign-in, wait a short time, called for blood work, sent to a room for vitals, ready to settle in and wait to see the doctor and we were called back within maybe 10 minutes for the consultation. We met her clinical doctor who will follow her for the rest of her chemotherapy. His name is Dr. Kantarjian (he gave her the challenge of being able to spell his name by the next time he sees her:) Dr. Kantarjian is head of the leukemia dept. at the hospital and he developed the protocol for Burkitts which is the form of acute leukemia Katrina has. Steve found that this protocol he developed has been successful for 15 years. He still sees some Burkitt's patients but most are seen by another doctor now but we're told Katrina's doctor has stayed very current with Burkitt's. He was forthright and personable. We are thankful he is going to be her doctor! He explained the need to continue to treat her leukemia/lymphoma aggressively so Katrina will go back to the hospital on Monday to be seen by him, have a bone marrow aspiration (yes, again) and then be admitted for Course 2. She is going to have 8 courses of chemo spaced about every 3 weeks. This should get her through chemo in about 5 months. Currently she continues to have some stomach upset causing more weight loss. Please pray she is able to eat and gain some weight back. She is having difficulty sleeping and this will be again disrupted with another hospitalization- would you pray she could sleep at night while she is home? Insomnia is so frustrating when you are tired.
I wrote the Hebrews verse to ask you to pray specifically for this Course 2 chemo that Katrina would tolerate it without complications, reactions or set-backs. That would be a complete reversal of the first go-round as you know where she suffered pneumonia, tumor lysis, acute kidney failure, blood infection and GI ilius problems. Please pray for God's grace and mercy in her time of need. Obviously it was hard news for Katrina to hear, but this is the only option. We continue to be encouraged that the chemo is working and she is in remission. This is curable and she is young so that is in her favor. Thanks for specifically petitioning our Great High Priest for her- so many of you have told us you pray daily and some many times a day. Lori

What a friend we have in Jesus,
ReplyDeleteAll our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer.
Oh, what peace we often forfeit;
Oh, what needless pain we bear--
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged--
Take it to the Lord in Prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness--
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge--
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
In his arms he'll take and shield you;
You will find a solace there.
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
God bless you.

I'm glad that you made it quickly through your first out patient visit. I know the news of going back into the hospital so soon after you got home is difficult to hear. But...maybe, the sooner you get in, the sooner you get out permanently!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited that you are being seen by Dr. Kantarjian! It seems that the Lord has continually been leading you to the best possible Drs.! I will continue to pray that the next hospital trip will be much easier and that you will be blessed with the ability to eat and sleep to help give you strength.
Thinking and praying for you.

Sweet friend-
ReplyDeleteWe were gone on a brief anniversary trip but were thrilled to see when we got back that you are HOME! We were going to come visit you at MD Anderson (or at least say hello to your mom) tomorrow because I have an MRI at the Med Center (I was supposed to have a spinal tap but convinced the doctor to wait a few months....I can teach you how to do that in the future if you'd like...haha). Anyway, we are bummed that we'll miss you tomorrow but we are SOOOOO thrilled that you are home and resting in your own bed. We are praying that phase 2 of your treatment will be much smoother.
We are continuing to pray! We so appreciate the updates and will pray specifically!
ReplyDeleteTonight I am going to TVHS's Freshman Orientation...can you believe our Ian is going into High School?!!!!
Warmly,
Wendy
God has all the details taken care of...your doctor is the doctor who came up with the protocol for Burkitts...! Incidences of Coincidences increase with prayer!
ReplyDeleteFor it is "He who can do immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine!" (Eph.3:20). We'll be thinking of you as you're admitted to Course 2...one course closer to Graduation!!

"Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once again. I will praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praise to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel." Psalm 71:20-22
ReplyDeletePraying for rest, restoration and comfort.
With continued prayer and all our love,
