"The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms."
Deuteronomy 33:27
Katrina and I had several laughs today- one is that being at home (from a hospitalization), doesn't mean you are home that much:) We got up and on the road to the Houston Cancer Center this AM, had blood work done and waited her turn to see the doctor. We absolutely appreciate the time the nurse and doctor spend with Katrina so it makes waiting our turn easier. Katrina's White Blood Cell count was way up already. It was .2 on Saturday and today was 3.8 (normal range 4-11). Her hemoglobin is bordering on low so that may mean she'll need blood this week. Her Platelet count continued to drop and was 10 this AM. (normal is 140-440). Needless to say, her doctor ordered platelets before she left the hospital today. That was 12:30. I had put on the blog we might be done at noon:) ~the optimist that I am:) Her potassium is on the low side of normal. The oral potassium had been bothering her stomach and the doctor recently discontinued it, much to her pleasure. She had been trying to eat potassium rich foods, the ones she likes and that included 1/2 a banana. The doctor told her today to "eat 3 bananas a day with orange juice in between." We were still laughing about that on the way home. Who eats 3 bananas a day??
Since Katrina was not scheduled for outpatient therapy, we waited for 3 hours and then they found a room to have her infusion of the platelets. That went well. We got done about 5:30, got her prescription, found the car (easy to spot by evening even in a usually full parking garage), got through rush hour traffic including going around 2 accidents on I-10 and arrived home at 7:15. We were treated to a wonderfully delicious dinner brought by the secretary of her school- a most welcome treat!
We got some good news. She is now going to be able to get some of the blood labs done right here in Katy. Starting tomorrow AM! We will go to her original oncologist who Dr. Kantarjian said is a "wonderful doctor" and we agree. It will save on time, gas, and energy, what we think will be 2 days a week. She can even get blood at the local hospital as needed. It will be a nice partnership and we are thankful. Her blood pressure has been stablizing and the doctor says we can discontinue her blood pressure meds, of which there are two. So please pray that stays in the normal range. The less meds the better! As always, thank you for your prayers on Katrina's behalf through these leukemia courses of treatment! Lori

Great to hear good news! I have been praying specifically about the white blood cell count - big improvement! So, I hope you like bananas - you will be eating enough to make a monkey jealous. :) I'm glad to see that you have kept your sense of humor and that there have been things to laugh about.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless you all - you are in our prayers!

Tell Mrs. Yang that Avery will come and eat 3 bananas with her. But she is all on her own with the orange juice.
